We carry out tree surgery across the London Borough of Croydon, from the Victorian terraces of Addiscombe and Thornton Heath to the wooded hills of Purley, Kenley and Coulsdon. Each area has its own page, and where an area sits across a borough boundary we say so and check which council applies to your address.

Postcodes are a guide, because a postcode can cover addresses in more than one borough. Send us your full address and we'll confirm.
Tree protection is decided by the council for your address, not by the name of the area. Getting this wrong can mean a fine, so we check it first.
| If your tree is in | The rules come from | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Addiscombe, Shirley, Thornton Heath, South Croydon, Selsdon, Sanderstead, Purley, Coulsdon or Kenley | Croydon Council | TPOs and conservation areas covered by Croydon's rules. See our TPO guide and conservation area guide |
| Norbury | Usually Croydon, but check edge addresses | We confirm the borough before we quote |
| Upper Norwood and Crystal Palace | One of several boroughs, depending on the address | We check which council covers your road |
| Just over the Croydon boundary (for example in a neighbouring borough or in Surrey) | A different council | Croydon's rules don't apply. Tell us your address and we'll say whether we can help |
For addresses in Croydon, Croydon Council says a tree preservation order stops visually important trees being removed or pruned without formal permission, and that you must give six weeks' written notice before work to a tree in a conservation area. Fines of up to £20,000 can follow for cutting down a protected tree without permission, and up to £2,500 for pruning one.
Not sure which council you're in? Send us your full address and a photo of the tree. We'll check the council, whether a TPO applies and whether you're in a conservation area, before we quote.
North and south have different ground. Broadly, the north of the borough (Norbury, Thornton Heath, Upper Norwood and Crystal Palace) sits on clay soil that shrinks in dry weather, while the southern hills (Purley, Kenley, Coulsdon, Sanderstead and Selsdon) sit on chalk. That affects subsidence risk, root behaviour and how easy it is to grind a stump. See trees near buildings.
Different housing, different access. Terraces in the north often mean narrow passages and no vehicle access. The southern suburbs usually have larger gardens, but also slopes and steep drives.
Conservation areas and TPOs cluster. Several areas have named conservation areas, such as the East India Estate in Addiscombe, the Norbury Estate, the Webb Estate and Upper Woodcote Village in Purley, and Croham Manor Road in South Croydon, which is why we check first.
Woodland and wildlife. The southern edge of the borough sits close to commons, woods and the North Downs, so nesting birds and bats are a regular consideration. See our nesting season guide.
Ash dieback. Ash is common in the woods and gardens of the south, so we assess ash trees before any felling. See our ash dieback guide.
