How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Croydon?

Stump grinding in Croydon typically costs between £120 and £700 per stump, depending mainly on the stump's diameter, the depth required and how easily the machine can reach it. A small stump with a clear route in is a short job. A large stump with big surface roots, or one at the end of a narrow passage, takes longer.

Stump diameter (measured across the top)Indicative cost
Under 20cm (about 8in)£120 – £220
20 to 50cm (8 to 20in)£160 – £350
Over 50cm (20in+)£300 – £700, with very large stumps and big root plates quoted individually

What Stump Grinding Involves

Stump grinding uses a machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chip a stump away below ground level. It's the usual way to remove a stump without digging it out by hand. We sweep the cutting wheel across the stump in passes, working down to the agreed depth. The remaining roots are left in the ground, where they rot away over time.

A typical stump takes between 30 minutes and a couple of hours, depending on size.

How Deep Do We Grind?

The RHS says shallow grinding, to 20 to 25cm below ground level, is normally enough for laying turf, while replanting or landscaping needs deeper grinding, to at least 30cm. We agree the depth with you at the quote stage.

Your plan for the areaGrinding depth (RHS guidance)
Lay turf or restore the lawn20 to 25cm below ground level

Stump Grinding Compared With Other Methods

MethodWhat it involvesThings to know
Stump grindingA machine chips the stump away below groundWorks on most stumps; the machine needs access
Digging out by handDig around the stump and cut the rootsThe RHS says this can work for small trees; hard, slow work for anything larger
WinchingPull a small stump out with a winchSuits small trees; the winch must be rated for the stump
Chemical treatmentWeedkiller on the stumpThe RHS doesn't support weedkillers and recommends non-chemical alternatives
Leaving it to rotLet the stump decay naturallyCan take many years, and a rotting stump can harbour fungi and pests. See below

Can I Just Leave the Stump to Rot?

You can, but it's slow. A large stump can take many years to break down, stays a trip hazard and can sprout. Rotting stumps can also host fungi such as honey fungus, which can spread to nearby living plants. If you want the space back soon, grinding is the practical option.

Will a Stump Regrow After Grinding?

Some species send up fresh shoots from the stump or roots, called suckers, and grinding doesn't always stop it completely, though removing the stump to the right depth greatly reduces it. Species that commonly resprout include sycamore, willow, poplar, cherry, plum, lime and ash. Conifers, including leylandii, don't resprout from a stump, so regrowth isn't a worry there. If shoots do appear after grinding, cut or pull them off as they come, and they usually fade as the remaining root runs out of energy. We'll tell you at the quote stage if your tree is a likely resprouter.

Stump Grinding for Every Situation

Stump Grinding in a Small Garden or Through a Narrow Gate

Most Croydon gardens, especially the terraces around Thornton Heath, Norbury and Addiscombe, can only be reached through a side passage or gate. We use compact pedestrian grinders, which can often fit through a gate about 80cm wide. Send a photo of the access route, or measure the narrowest point (gate, passage, steps), when you request your quote.

Stumps on Slopes and Steep Gardens

Gardens in Sanderstead, Purley, Kenley, Coulsdon and Selsdon often slope. Grinding on a slope takes more care and sometimes a different set-up. Tell us how steep the ground is, and whether there are steps.

Stumps Close to Walls, Drains, Fences and Cables

A stump next to a wall, drain, shed or fence needs careful control of the cutting wheel, and we check for services before we start. If the stump is tight against a structure, we may grind to a safe line and finish by hand.

Leylandii and Conifer Stumps

Conifer stumps don't resprout, so some owners leave them in, but they stay in the way and take years to rot. Grinding them is usually quicker and cleaner, particularly after a long hedge or row of leylandii has been taken out. See tree removal and hedge cutting.

Stump Removal Before a Patio, Driveway, Extension or Garden Room

If you're building or paving over the spot, a stump left in the ground can rot and cause the base to settle unevenly. Tell us what's going on top. We'll grind deeper and, where needed, remove large roots in the build area. Always check TPO and planning conditions before the build begins.

Stump Grinding Before Replanting

To plant a new tree in the same spot, grind to at least 30cm, remove most of the chippings and top up with fresh soil. Don't replant a tree of the same species straight into the old stump area without checking for disease first, since some pathogens persist in old roots.

Stumps From a Storm-Felled or Previously Removed Tree

Many stumps are left behind by earlier owners, previous tree surgeons or storm damage. We can grind these at any time. See emergency tree work if there's still a fallen tree to clear.

Several Stumps or an Overgrown Garden

If you have a row of stumps from a removed hedge or conifers, we grind them in one visit, and the price per stump drops.

Landlords, Letting Agents and Selling a Property

A tidy, level garden helps with a sale or a tenant change. We can clear stumps and leave the ground ready for turf, and give a written quote to pass to the owner or managing agent.

Hire a Grinder or Call a Professional?

Stump grinders can be hired, but they're heavy, noisy machines that throw chippings at speed, and they need protective equipment and a check for underground services before use. For large stumps, tight access, or stumps close to walls, drains or cables, a professional is usually the safer choice. Hire costs, delivery and your time often close the price gap for a single stump.

Safety, Protection and What We Check First

A grinder cuts below ground level, so we check a few things before the machine starts.

Underground Services

Buried electricity cables, gas pipes, water pipes and telecoms lines can be damaged by machines that cut below ground. Before we start, we check service plans (the free LinesearchBeforeUdig service is a common route) and use cable detection tools where needed. If you know where services run to your shed, garden lighting or outbuilding, tell us.

Is the Tree Protected?

If the tree is still alive, or you're not sure whether a stump belongs to a protected tree, check before any work. Cutting down, uprooting or wilfully damaging a protected tree without permission is an offence. Croydon Council says fines of up to £20,000 can follow for cutting down a protected tree without permission. Check with Croydon Council or send us the address. TPO guide.

SituationWhat to do

Tree is still alive, or you're unsureCheck TPO and conservation area status first
Tree removed under a council consent with a replanting conditionKeep to the replanting condition; tell us your plans
Stump in a conservation areaCheck; we confirm the position before we quote

Wildlife

Stumps and old roots can shelter nesting birds and small animals, and dead wood supports insects. We take a quick look before work, and nesting season (March to August) can occasionally delay a job.

After Stump Grinding: Chippings, Lawn and Replanting

Grinding produces a pile of chippings, usually roughly the volume of the stump or more. The RHS notes that most green waste from removing trees can be reused or recycled in the garden. Tell us at the quote stage how you'd like it handled:

For turf, shallow grinding is normally enough. For replanting, ask for the deeper depth and have the chippings removed, since fresh woodchip can rob young plants of nitrogen. The hole will settle over the following weeks, so top it up with soil as it sinks.

Stump Grinding FAQs

How much does stump grinding cost in Croydon?

Most stump grinding in Croydon costs between £120 and £700 per stump, depending on diameter, depth and access. Several stumps in one visit cost less each. You get a fixed written quote after we've assessed the job.

How deep do you grind a stump?

It depends on your plans. The RHS says 20 to 25cm is normally enough for laying turf, and at least 30cm for replanting or landscaping.

How long does stump grinding take?

A small stump takes around 30 to 60 minutes. Large stumps with big roots can take a couple of hours.

Can you grind a stump in a small garden or through a narrow gate?

Usually yes. We use compact machines that fit through most side gates. Send a photo or the width of the narrowest point.

Will the stump grow back?

Conifers such as leylandii don't resprout. Species such as sycamore, willow, cherry and ash can send up shoots; removing these as they appear usually stops them.

What happens to the roots?

The main stump is ground out, and the remaining roots are left in the ground to rot. For building or paving work we can remove the larger roots.

Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?

Yes, if the stump is ground deep enough, at least 30cm according to the RHS. Remove most of the chippings and top up with fresh soil. Tell us your plans when you ask for a quote.

Can I leave the stump to rot?

You can, but it can take many years, stays a trip hazard and can host fungi. Grinding is the faster way to clear the space.

Do I need permission to grind a stump?

Usually not for an unprotected tree already removed, but check first if the tree is still alive, may be protected or is in a conservation area.

Should I hire a stump grinder?

It's possible, but grinders are heavy and throw chippings, and you need to check for underground services. For large stumps or tight access a professional is usually safer.

Does the price include taking away the chippings?

Not by default if you'd like them left as mulch. Taking them away adds to the price, and the quote shows exactly what's included.

Can you do the stump at the same time as removing the tree?

Yes. It's usually cheaper to combine them in one visit. Ask when you request your quote.

Is stump grinding messy?

It throws up chippings and some soil around the stump. We shield the area and clear up afterwards.
