We found no conservation area covering Sanderstead itself, but Croydon Council has named Sanderstead Village among nine areas it would consider for conservation area status, and its Cabinet agreed a list of potential new areas in December 2025. Until one is designated, the main protection for private trees is a tree preservation order. If it is designated, Croydon's six-week notice rule would apply to trees within it. Check the council's current list for your road.
Croydon Council also says a TPO stops visually important trees being removed or pruned without formal permission. Email development.management@croydon.gov.uk with the tree's details, or send us your address. See the TPO guide.
Sanderstead Plantation, on Addington Road, is a woodland of about 8.8 hectares owned by Croydon Council. The council describes it as predominantly beech, with oak, horse chestnut, sweet chestnut and sycamore, and noted for its bluebells in May. The London Parks and Gardens Trust lists it as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance in the Green Belt.
Sanderstead Pond (and Green) and All Saints Churchyard are on Croydon's local list of historic parks and gardens, which is a heritage record rather than a tree control.
Maps and records describe public sites and one or two documented areas, not every garden. Check your own tree with the council.
These follow from the area's setting.
| Typical job | Why it comes up here | Rule to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Reducing or lifting a mature garden tree | Mature trees are common around the woodland | TPO check |
| Work on trees near woodland | Gardens near Sanderstead Plantation | Who owns the strip; nests and bats |
| Trimming boundary hedges | Suburban plots | Nests between March and August |
| Removing a dead or dangerous tree | Any mature tree can fail | Council's dead, dying and dangerous wording |
Gardens near the Plantation may back onto council land, so check who owns the boundary strip before any work, and expect extra wildlife checks.
If a vehicle or chipper needs road space, Croydon Council offers a dispensation to park on yellow lines while work is carried out, or a suspension of a parking bay. It asks for at least five working days' notice, payment first and a separate licence for a skip on the road. Check current fees on the council's page.
Tell us if a tree is on a boundary or overhangs next door. You may be able to cut branches back to the boundary but not beyond it, and cuttings should be offered back. Work only goes ahead with the tree owner's consent.
The Sanderstead Village proposal is under review and is not confirmed. We do not describe any Sanderstead street as being in a conservation area unless the council's current list says so.
London's tree canopy cover is 19.6% (GLA Tree Canopy Cover 2024, mainly 2022 data, ±0.3%). Ward-level figures are modelled estimates; see the GLA dataset.
Tree surgery in Sanderstead typically costs £200 to £1,100 for most jobs, and £1,000 to £3,000+ for large trees, depending on the job, the tree and the access. Large gardens and mature trees can mean bigger jobs, which we confirm at the site visit. Use the cost calculator for a guide price, then get a fixed written quote after we've seen the job. See the cost guide for what changes the price.
Tell us the job and your road. We check protection first, then send a written quote.

Only if the tree is protected by a TPO or in a conservation area. Croydon Council says a fine of up to £20,000 can follow for cutting down a protected tree without permission.
