We found no conservation area covering Selsdon itself, but the Addington Village Conservation Area lies next door and has been extended to include Addington Palace's stables and clubhouse, the parkland, South Lodge and Roxton Gardens. In a Croydon conservation area you must give six weeks' written notice before work to a tree. Check your road on the council's map.
Selsdon Wood is a Local Nature Reserve and ancient woodland owned by the National Trust and managed by Croydon Council; report trees on it to the council. Selsdon Park Hotel is on Croydon's local list of historic parks and gardens, which records fine nineteenth-century trees including a cedar; a local list entry is a heritage record, and tree controls come from TPOs and conservation areas. If you plan to fell more than a few trees, check whether a Forestry Commission felling licence is needed.
Selsdon Wood, Croydon's largest wood, lies on the dip slope of the North Downs. These are woodland records, not a survey of gardens.
| Tree | What the records say |
|---|---|
| Oak (pedunculate and sessile) | Widespread, and the principal species in the wood |
| Ash | Widespread; a main canopy species with field maple and oak |
| Field maple | Part of the often thin canopy; ash-maple woodland on chalk slopes |
| Yew, whitebeam, birch | Present alongside the canopy trees |
| Hornbeam, horse chestnut | Along strips and borders of the wood |
| Hazel | Coppice with a few oak and ash standards |
Because ash is widespread locally, ash dieback matters here. Councils describe it as a destructive fungal disease first recorded in south-east England in 2012. Large infected trees can become dangerous before they die, and landowners are responsible for trees on their own land. Councils also advise not to fell healthy ash out of concern about the disease, so we assess it first. See the ash dieback guide.
These follow from the area's setting.
| Typical job | Why it comes up here | Rule to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Checking or removing an ash tree | Ash is widespread in local woodland | Protection and licence checks |
| Reducing or lifting a mature oak | Oak is the principal local species | TPO check |
| Work on trees at a woodland edge | Gardens backing onto woodland buffer land | Who owns the strip; nests and bats |
| Trimming or reducing hedges | Boundary hedging on suburban plots | Nests between March and August |
Selsdon Wood sits on the raised dip slope of the North Downs, so some plots slope. If your garden backs onto woodland or a strip of land, check who owns it before any work.
If a vehicle or chipper needs road space, Croydon Council offers a dispensation to park on yellow lines while work is carried out, or a suspension of a parking bay. It asks for at least five working days' notice, payment first and a separate licence for a skip on the road. Check current fees on the council's page.
Tell us if a tree is on a boundary or overhangs next door. You may be able to cut branches back to the boundary but not beyond it, and cuttings should be offered back. Work only goes ahead with the tree owner's consent.
The wood's planting history includes a Centenary Plantation of 100 oaks (1983) and a Jubilee Plantation of oaks and beeches (1977). The species list is volunteer-maintained and describes the wood, not local gardens.
London's tree canopy cover is 19.6% (GLA Tree Canopy Cover 2024, mainly 2022 data, ±0.3%). Ward-level figures are modelled estimates; see the GLA dataset.
